Sustainable Forest Management

Pentarch Forestry™ Pty Ltd is known throughout the industry as a trusted and established forest manager and international wood marketer.

We manage private forest estates to ensure optimal environmentally sustainable forest management practice at all times by applying:

  •  a systematic approach to sustainable forest management that is independently certified to the Australian Forestry Standard for Sustainable Forest Management AS 4708; and
  • “forest to market” solutions that optimise returns to growers.

Our Sustainable Forestry Policy, which is part of our management plan, commits the company to complying with the relevant sustainable forest management standards, the principles of sustainable forestry and relevant legal and regulatory requirements.

Our Forest Management Plan demonstrates how we meet these principles.

Pentarch Forestry™ has achieved certification to the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS 4708) which is managed by Responsible Wood. It includes operations within New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania. A copy of the certificate can be downloaded here.

We respect the importance to all Pentarch Forestry™ customers that the Responsible Wood Certification Scheme has international recognition. Responsible Wood is the Australian member of the international Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), the world’s largest forest certification system.

Compliance with forest management system certification is audited by an accredited, independent, third-party certification body to ensure compliance, continuous improvement, and transparency. Surveillance audits occur every nine months, with re-certification audits conducted every three years.

A summary of the most recent re-certification audit can be downloaded here.

Defined Forest Area

Pentarch is a certified forest manager and properties are added to the Defined Forest Area (DFA) once they are assessed as suitable and contractual agreements have been established with the landowner, giving Pentarch legal management control.

Chain of Custody

Pentarch Forestry™ has achieved multi-site chain of custody certification to the PEFC International Standard – Chain of Custody of Forest and Trees Based Products – Requirements (ST 2002) and the Australian Chain of Custody Standard (AS 4707) managed by Responsible Wood Ltd.

Chain of Custody Certification (CoC Policy) provides the opportunity to differentiate forest products harvested from responsibly managed forests in the marketplace and confers an ‘environmentally and socially-responsible’ seal of approval. Pentarch has established a multi-site chain of custody system for forest products across several sites throughout NSW, Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia.

Chain of Custody is the process by which materials are tracked by individual operations as wood is transformed from a tree in the forest to a product provided to a consumer in a wholesale or retail market (i.e. from forest to sawmill to processing facility to marketplace).

Through the achievement of Chain of Custody certification, Pentarch Forestry™ enhances its ability to demonstrate and promote a healthy, local forest products industry – the connection between a healthy forest ecosystem and certified wood product in the marketplace.

Maintaining a system of continuous improvement within the Chain of Custody certification demonstrates that Pentarch Forestry™ is committed to implementing and demonstrating ethical business behaviour; reassuring consumers that their purchasing decisions are responsible.

Third party certification by organisations accredited to the appropriate standard provides the independent verification and assurance that products carrying a certification claim are from professionally managed forests or controlled sources from forests where the risk of a controversial source has been assessed as negligible.

A copy of the Responsible Wood and PEFC CoC certificates can be downloaded here. (RW CoC Certificate and PEFC CoC Certificate)

Pentarch Forestry™ has also achieved certification to the FSC® Chain of Custody standard and Requirements for Sourcing Controlled Wood for export softwood plantation products from Eden, NSW and hardwood plantation products from Burnie, Tasmania. Our due diligence system is used to evaluate our suppliers who do not have FSC certification and ensure they meet the requirements of the FSC Controlled Wood standard. A summary of our due diligence system can be found here: Due Diligence System Summary.
